Understanding Your Air Conditioning System

Your central air conditioning system has four main components. This includes an air handler, an evaporator coil, a condensing coil, and air ducts. The air ducts help deliver the air to individual rooms throughout your home. Every component of your air conditioning system needs to work together. It is important to get the proper components during the original installation. A mismatched system will not operate efficiently and, in some cases, will not operate at all.

Parts of the Air Conditioning System

  • The air handler: This part of the system blows air through the evaporator coil and into the ductwork. The ductwork sends the air throughout the home. An air filter should always be on the intake side of the furnace. This helps clean the air before the air gets cooled and circulated throughout the home.
  • The Condenser: The outdoor unit of a split system is the condenser. It consists of the compressor, which is a pump that circulates the refrigerant. It moves the refrigerant through the evaporator coil. There is a large radiator coil to transfer heat and a fan to blow air through the coil to keep it cool. It is important to keep the area around the condenser clear so it can operate at peak performance.
  • The Evaporator Coil: This vital piece sits on top of the furnace and is enclosed in an insulated sheet-metal box. The evaporator coil works with the outside condenser using two copper tubes. One tube has a thick rubber coating to help with insulation. Refrigerant (R-22 or R-410a) will circulate through this coil.
  • The Air Ducts: Today’s ductwork consists of insulated flexible tubes. They can snake across the attic floor or under the house. Unfortunately, the ducting system is out of sight and out of mind. The ductwork is often forgotten when it comes to cleaning and repair.

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. SEER is a number by which you can compare the efficiency ratings of air conditioners. The lowest rating allowed today is 14 SEER, so every equipment manufacturer has to produce a 14 SEER unit. Not all 14 SEER units perform the same. The differences will be clear when you look closer at things on the system. This includes the construction, quality reliability, durability, and enhanced warranties.

  • Do I need to keep adding coolant to my air conditioning system?

If you keep having to add refrigerant to your system, you likely have a leak. As the #1 rated HVAC company in Tucson. We can send an air conditioning technician who can help trace and repair coolant leaks.

Frequently Asked Questions About AC Systems

How does a central air system work?

A central air system consists of an outdoor unit. This contains the compressor and condenser. There is also an indoor unit that contains the evaporator. The outdoor unit pumps refrigerant to the indoor unit. Then, it evaporates and absorbs heat from the indoor air. The cooled air is then circulated back into the room by the indoor unit. Central air conditioner systems can be in larger homes or commercial buildings.

Can any home have central air?

Any home can have central air installed, though it’s far more common for newer homes to have this feature. That’s because central air requires ductwork to work. Most older homes often don’t have the necessary infrastructure. Not only that, but installing central air in an older home can be quite expensive and disruptive.

What Is The Difference Between An Air Conditioner And a Heat Pump?

An air conditioning system uses refrigerant to cool the air in your home. A heat pump both heats and cools your home by moving heat from one place to another.
