EV Charger Installation in Tucson - Level 2 Home Charging

Intelligent Design installs Level 2 home EV chargers across Tucson, Marana, Oro Valley, Vail, Sahuarita and Green Valley. Our licensed electricians (Arizona ROC 322375) run the dedicated 240-volt circuit, mount the charger and pull the permit, and most installs finish in half a day. The estimate visit is free. Call (520) 333-2665 or book online.

What you get with a Level 2 charger

A Level 1 charger is the cord that came with the car. It plugs into a normal wall outlet and adds a few miles of range per hour, which is fine for a plug-in hybrid and not fine for a Tucson commute in a full EV. A Level 2 charger runs on a 240-volt circuit, the same kind your dryer or air handler uses, and refills most vehicles overnight.

Our electricians install Level 2 chargers from ChargePoint, Tesla Wall Connector, JuiceBox and the other common brands, hardwired or on a dedicated outlet, in garages, carports and driveways. Most installations are completed in half a day. Level 2 chargers need a 40 to 50 amp circuit, so the first thing we check is whether your panel has the room.

Why the estimate visit matters in Tucson

Between January 1 and October 27, 2026, our electrical team completed 661 jobs across the service area, 521 of them at Tucson addresses, and 44 of those visits were in-home EV charger estimates (dispatch records, electrical division, completed jobs). That estimate visit is where the install succeeds or fails, because Tucson homes have three things working against a quick charger install.

First, panel capacity. Many older homes in Tucson, Catalina Foothills and East Tucson still have 100 amp panels, and a two-unit AC home in July already uses most of that. Adding a 50 amp charger circuit to a full panel is how breakers start tripping on the hottest afternoons. We run a load calculation on every estimate and tell you plainly whether the charger fits, whether a smaller amperage setting fits, or whether a panel upgrade comes first. Our panel upgrade page covers that work: electrical panel upgrades in Tucson.

Second, distance. In many Tucson homes the panel sits on the far side of the house from where the car parks. Longer conduit runs mean larger wire and more labor, and that is something you should see on the written estimate before any work starts, not on the final invoice.

Third, heat. A charger mounted on a west-facing stucco wall in a carport sits in direct sun for the hottest hours of the day. We place chargers and run conduit with that in mind, and we recommend outdoor-rated units for anything not inside a closed garage.

How the installation goes

The electrician arrives in a marked truck (we run 42 of them out of our Fort Lowell office), confirms the charger location with you, and shuts off power at the main. The new breaker goes into the panel, the circuit runs in conduit or through the attic to the charger location, and the charger is mounted and wired. We test under load, walk you through the charger's app or indicator lights, and clean up before we leave. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection. We have served Tucson since 2011, with Wood's Plumbing roots back to 1979.

One customer, Staci, left this Google review after an electrical project: "Fantastic experience working with Intelligent Design! Erik and Adrian are skilled and knowledgeable. They worked together with a fun and confident demeanor. Erik listened during the consultation and understood the electrical work we were needing to have done in our space. When he and Adrian returned to complete the work order they did so without any issues. Truly was a positive experience working with them both. Bonus stars for their attention to detail and cleaning up before leaving!"

That two-visit pattern, a consultation first and the work order after, is exactly how our EV charger installs run.

Pairing a charger with solar

If you already have rooftop solar, or are thinking about it, the charger and the solar inverter both want space in the same panel. Planning them together avoids paying for a panel upgrade twice. Our solar and electrical teams work out of the same office at 1145 E Fort Lowell Rd, so one estimate visit can cover both. Frequently asked questions

What happens during the EV charger estimate visit? The electrician looks at your panel, counts the open breaker spaces, runs a load calculation that includes your AC equipment, measures the run from the panel to where the car parks, and checks whether the mounting spot is in sun or shade. You get a written price before anything is ordered. The visit is free.

Do I need a 200 amp panel to install a Level 2 charger? Not always. Some panels can carry a charger set to a lower amperage without an upgrade. The load calculation decides. If the numbers do not work, we show you the panel upgrade price alongside the charger price so you can decide on both at once.

Hardwired or plug-in: which is right for a Tucson garage? Hardwired units handle higher charging amperage and are the only option for an outdoor carport or driveway mount. A plug-in charger on a dedicated 240-volt outlet is easier to take with you if you move. Both are fine inside a closed garage; we will recommend one based on your car and your panel.

Can you install the charger outside if I park in the driveway? Yes. We use outdoor-rated chargers and weatherproof conduit for carports and driveways, and we place the unit out of direct afternoon sun where the layout allows.

Does Tucson summer heat shorten the life of a home charger? Heat is hard on every piece of electrical equipment, but a properly rated charger mounted out of direct sun and wired on a correctly sized circuit holds up well here. The failures we see come from undersized wire and sun-baked plastic, both of which the estimate visit is designed to prevent.
